A climber is spending the night stuck on a ledge in Fiordland, unable to climb up or down.
The man, in his 20s, did not appear injured but was stuck on a cliff-face with an overhang of about 80 metres above him, preventing him being winched out, Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand spokesman Steve Rendle said.
The climber’s personal locator beacon was detected at 6.55pm. He was near the Whitewater River, near George Sound.
The Southern Lakes Helicopter with a medic went to the scene, Rendle said.
The climber was in a party of three, and had maintained radio contact with his companions.
He had survival equipment with him.
About 7am tomorrow the Alpine Cliff Rescue team will meet the Southern Lakes rescue helicopter crew in Te Anau and fly to the scene, Rendle said.
