Man collapses, dies in gym
A 22-year-old Upper Hutt man died while working out at a gym this morning.
Wellington Free Ambulance staff tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the man for at least 20 minutes after being called to the City Fitness gym in Upper Hutt about 7.30am, an ambulance spokesman said.
The man was unconscious and not breathing when an ambulance arrived.
He died at the scene, and his body was removed at 9am. Police are trying to contact the man's family.
The man collapsed while exercising on a treadmill, gym manager August Collins said.
The man had an existing medical condition the gym had been aware of, City Fitness regional director Sam Wagstaff said.
Gym staff performed first aid when the man collapsed, she said.
Staff were upset and "raw" about the incident, Wagstaff said.
The gym is currently closed, but may re-open later in the day.
It was the first death at the gym, Wagstaff said.
City Fitness founder Dominic Rogerson said it was ''unusual and unfortunate'' for young people to die during exercise.
The Fire Service also responded to the scene and assisted ambulance staff.
