A large tub of paint is causing delays on Auckland's Northwestern Motorway.

The 1000-litre container of acrylic paint spilled from truck near spaghetti junction just before 5pm, a Northern Fire Communications spokesman said.

Five fire crews were at the scene.

A specialist unit was also working to absorb the paint from the motorway, he said.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
