The family of missing Christchurch man Kurt Green have been notified that West Coast police have found a body at Point Elizabeth, north of Greymouth.

West Coast police area commander Inspector John Canning said a member of the public found a foot washed up on Rapahoe Beach yesterday evening and alerted police.

A search team was immediately launched and a body was found on the rocks at Point Elizabeth, near where the foot was located, about 8.45pm yesterday.

The remains were sent to Christchurch for forensic examination to establish the deceased person's identity, which could take a week and would involve DNA checks and dental records, Canning said.

Meanwhile, Green's family had been told that a body had been found, he said.

The 30-year-old went missing from Greymouth on March 9.

He had travelled to the West Coast to attend the Wild Foods Festival in Hokitika the day before and stayed with friends that night in Blaketown.

However, some of his belongings were later found during a beach clean-up near the Blaketown tiphead, where he was last seen on March 9.

That prompted a search of Greymouth's beaches two weeks ago but police found no trace of him.

Canning said police were continuing their search in the area today in case any further remains or belongings were found.
