Governor-General's online popularity surge
The Governor General is enjoying a sudden surge in Facebook fans thanks to his royal tour updates.
The official Facebook page and Twitter account for Sir Jerry Mateparae has been sharing details of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's planned activities for their visit to New Zealand and the best chances of spotting them.
Earlier this week a former head of London’s Metropolitan Police royal protection squad, Dai Davies, called Mateparae an "idiot" for sharing the information. He said it was a manual for terrorists.
But those updates have done wonders for Mateparae's social media profile.
The Governor General's Facebook page has seen a 21 per cent increase in fans over the last week, and is increasing at a rate of 250 per cent week over week, Facebook figures showed.
Most fans of his page were between 18-34 and located in Auckland.
Mateparae has become a hot topic, with 2828 people currently "talking about" his Facebook page, which means they are liking, commenting and sharing his posts.
His most popular post this week featured William, Catherine and Prince George's latest family portrait, captioned "one more week to go".
The social media-savvy Governor General has also being making good use of hashtags to mark the #RoyalVisitNZ.
So far the only social media technique missing from Mateparae's skillset is the selfie.
