A body has been spotted in the Waikato River by a member of the public this afternoon.

Hamilton police Senior Sergeant Gael Mockford said the body was reported to police by a member of the public this afternoon on the edge of the river near the suburb of Riverlea, in southern Hamilton.

Police were currently in the process of identifying the body which is unlikely to be known until tomorrow.

Mrs Mockford said it was too soon to know if it was missing Kawhia man Trevor Smith who was last seen on Peacockes Rd, which is just north of the Riverlea suburb.

Mr Smith went missing three weeks ago from outside Waikato hospital.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
