Crash victim was 'lying in road in dark clothes'
A teenager killed after being struck by a car near Rakaia was lying on the road when the crash happened, police say.
Police were still trying to piece together the movements of 18-year-old Danny Mathew Hendriks before he was killed about 10.55pm on Saturday.
Hendriks was struck by a car on Acton Rd, just east of the mid-Canterbury town of Rakaia.
Senior Constable Mike Jackson said initial inquiries indicated Hendriks had been lying on the road at the time of the crash.
The incident happened on an unlit rural road in a 100kmh zone, and Hendriks was wearing dark clothing.
Police had now interviewed the driver and two passengers of the vehicle involved in the crash.
Jackson said inquiries were continuing and no decision had been made about whether any charges would be laid.
Police understood Hendriks had attended a function in Christchurch with a group earlier that day, returning to Rakaia in the evening.
"It's believed Mr Hendriks was heading to an address on the outskirts of the town, but at this stage we do not know the details of his movements on Saturday night," Jackson said.
Police called for information from anyone who saw a man walking in the area of Bridge St and State Highway 1 in Rakaia, and Elizabeth Ave or Michael St to the east of the town.
Anyone with information was asked to call Rakaia police on 03 302 7009 or Christchurch police on 03 363 7400.
