Short new defence force vice chief

Air Vice-Marshal Kevin Short has been appointed Defence Force (NZDF) vice chief.

Short, previously commander Joint Forces New Zealand, joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) in 1976.

He trained as a navigator and early on in his career worked in the airborne surveillance and reconnaissance force (No 5 Squadron), during which he logged more 5000 flying hours.

He has held many senior appointments in the RNZAF and NZDF, including Officer Commanding No 485 Wing, Assistant Chief Development, Assistant Chief Strategic Commitments and Intelligence, Deputy Chief of Air Force.

Most recently he was Commander Joint Forces, a post he held from February 2013.

He commanded Rotation 9 of the provincial reconstruction team in Bamyan, Afghanistan.
