A woman has died in a crash on State Highway 30 in eastern Bay of Plenty.
Police said it appeared the woman's car, which was heading towards Whakatane, crossed the centre-line and collided with a truck and trailer heading towards Rotorua at Onepu, between Kawerau and Te Teko, about 8.30am.
The woman in her 50s, who was from the Whakatane area, was the sole occupant of the car. She was thrown from the vehicle and despite concerted first-aid efforts she died at the scene.
Police said a serious crash investigation was under way.
It was the second fatal accident in the region in less than 14 hours, after a person was killed in a crash near Taneatua.
The driver failed to negotiate a moderate left-hand bend, crossed the centre-line and hit a concrete power pole at 6.30pm yesterday, police said.
A 36-year-old passenger died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, and the 33-year-old driver was taken to Whakatane Hospital with moderate injuries.
Police said it appeared alcohol and speed contributed to the crash, and the serious crash unit was investigating.
