A 74-year-old man whose car crashed into a tree near Pukekohe, South Auckland, amid heavy rain yesterday, has died.

Police said the crash happened when a car crashed into a tree at the intersection of Tuakau Road and Buckland Rd at about lunchtime.

The man in the vehicle was taken to Middlemore Hospital but has since died.

Crash investigator Constable Amy Weston said police were looking for more information on the vehicle leading up to the time it crashed.

"We are interested to hear from anyone who may have seen the black Isuzu Bighorn registration WE8279 in the areas of Pukekohe and Tuakau any time before the crash," she said, adding that the information would help piece together the car's journey and establish the cause of the crash.

Anyone with information should contact the Counties Manukau Serious Crash Unit in 09 261 1302 or to provide information anonymously contact the organisation Crimestoppers in 0800 555 111.
