The crash occurred just before 5am under the Carrington road overbridge, police said.
One person had serious injuries.
Police had diverted city-bound traffic from the motorway onto Great North Road at Waterview, however all lanes were now open.
Traffic was now free-flowing, but commuters were faced with huge delays for hours after the smash.
Meanwhile, a two-car crash caused delays into Wellington this morning.
The accident happened shortly before 6.30am near the intersection of the Kennedy-Good Bridge at the end Fairway Drive, and State Highway 2 in Lower Hutt, police said.
Two cars were involved and the southbound lane of State Highway 2 was reduced to a single lane.
There were a lot of delays earlier but the scene was cleared by 7am and traffic seemed to have returned to normal by 7.30am.
A Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman said there were only minor injuries.
