A new temporary library is set to open in Tuam St next month to provide services to the southern area of the CBD's four avenues.

Christchurch City Libraries announced today that Central Library Tuam, or Te Kete Wānanga o Tuam, would open at 9am on July 23.

It would be larger than the one at South City and would complement the library in Peterborough St, which opened in December last year to service the northern area of the four avenues.

The Tuam and Peterborough libraries both have collections of about 70,000 items and would be in place until the Central Library in Gloucester St, which sustained damage in the earthquakes, is operational again.

Libraries spokeswoman Erica Rankin said both the staff and collection from the Central South City Library would relocate to 121 Tuam St.

"We are really excited that our customers will have access to a larger, more fully equipped library. It is very accessible, being located next to the central station bus exchange and close to a council car park that currently has two hours free parking. It is also in close proximity to Re:Start."

Customers would have access to fiction, non-fiction, 32 computers, wireless access, CDs, DVDs, newspapers, a children's area and young adult material.

Central Library Tuam would be open Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm and weekends from 10am to 5pm. The current temporary mini-library in the South City Shopping Centre would close on Sunday, July 15.
