Christchurch diners could soon be enjoying meals sitting around tables made of the city's old wood.

Rekindle founder Juliet Arnott is calling on Cantabrians to donate wood that would otherwise go to waste.

She will hold a wood collection next Saturday in Worcester St to gather material for her creations.

"It's hard to get wood in Christchurch because of the demolition process with machines and the complexity of the insurance situation."

She is looking for dry planks of hardwood, such as any flooring or cladding, particularly matai, kauri, or rimu.

Arnott is not selling her creations directly to the general public yet.

"We are making 42 tabletops for C1 Espresso, and we have been in contact with other cafes, but we won't be advertising our wares until we have set up the fundamentals."

But the public might still be able to get a few pieces. The first dining tables and chairs produced in Christchurch will be available in an online auction later in the year to fundraise for Rekindle's workshop.

Rekindle would hire young people to help them get ready for entering the work force, she said.
