Community facilities in South Brighton and Sumner are set to be knocked down, with city councillors poised to sign demolition orders this week.

Christchurch City councillor Yani Johanson said the fate of the Sumner Library and the South Brighton Community Centre would be decided at a council meeting on December 6.

Both are earmarked for demolition.

Burwood-Pegasus Community Board chairwoman Linda Stewart said the demolition of the South Brighton centre would be a "serious blow" but was expected.

"The community is devastated to lose it . . . there's no way we can function without a community centre."

She hoped a temporary centre would be erected.
