The Christchurch City Council is closing the community centre building on Harewood Rd because of earthquake risk.
The decision was made following a Detailed Engineering Evaluation (DEE) assessment, the council said in a statement this afternoon.
The building is at 6 per cent of the New Building Standard (NBS) with potentially critical structural weaknesses that need further investigation.
Any council-owned buildings below 34 per cent of the NBS will be closed.
Community services general manager Michael Aitken said the council was aware of the inconvenience closing the community centre would cause.
The building is used by Harewood Playcentre and other community groups.
A full damage assessment of the building, including repair development and strengthening options, will be carried out.
