A 55-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the murder of a mother and daughter who were stabbed to death in West Auckland yesterday.

Farhat Malik and her daughter Sidra Malik were killed in the home on Pooks Rd, Ranui.

Ishrat Malik, who lived at the same address, appeared in Waitakere District Court this morning on the charges.

Malik, who is a taxi driver, was due to reappear in court again today.

Ishrat Malik called police to the house about 10am yesterday. He was taken with officers to help with inquiries into the double homicide investigation and later arrested.

Detective Inspector Greg Cramer yesterday said the mother was aged in her 50s and the daughter in her 20s.

Police weren't looking for anybody else in relation to the incident, he said.

Police believed the three were related, "but until formal identification has taken place we can't say".

The accused was refused name suppression.
