The driver of the truck who hit and killed a Christchurch cyclist has been charged over the incident.

Sharla Phyllis Haerewa, 22, was killed at about 6.30am on April 2 when she was cycling along Lincoln Rd.

The 75-year-old man was charged today with careless driving causing death. He will appear in court on Monday June 23.

Haerewa, a nursing student, was on her way to Christchurch Hospital. She had working lights on the front and back of her bike and a reflective cover on her bag.

Police said the truck turned directly into her path at the intersection with Domain Tce, knocking her from the bike and dragging it nearly 40 metres. Haerewa died at the scene.
