A Christchurch police officer is nursing a broken nose and battered head after a party in Riccarton turned violent.

Police were attending a party on Riccarton Rd around 10.30pm last night when the officer stepped between a male assaulting a female partygoer.

However, the drunk female victim turned on the officer, kicking and punching him in the head. She was joined by other female partygoers who continued the attack until nearby officers could come to his rescue.

A 17-year-old male and 14-year-old were both arrested. The male was charged with assaulting a female, resisting arrest, and assault of a police officer. He will appear in court on Tuesday.

The female has been charged with assault with intent to injured and will appear in Youth Court.

The officer faces surgery for the broken nose.

Senior Sergeant Corrie Parnell said the attack was ''absolutely senseless''.

The injured officer was recuperating at home.

Alcohol was judged to be a ''major factor''.
