A gang member on the run from police in Northland has been caught - with his own wanted notice in his pocket.

The 23-year-old "high-risk offender" - a patched member of the Tribesmen Motorcycle Gang - was arrested in the Far North last night.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called in because police believed the man, wanted for breaching court release conditions, was armed.

About 11pm he was found at a house at Lake Ohia on State Highway 10 and arrested.

Police found two guns, some ammunition and a small amount of cannabis during the incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rhys Johnston said "interestingly" the man had a copy of a newspaper article, with his wanted photo in it, in his pocket.

He has appeared in Kaitaia District Court charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of cannabis and breach of court release conditions.
