Seven teens driving two stolen cars have led police on a chase from Waikato to central Auckland.

A police spokeswoman said two stolen cars were seen in Meremere about 1.30pm today.

One car stopped for police but the other led officers on a chase up the southern motorway.

Police abandoned the pursuit because of concerns about how the car was being driven, but kept tabs on it with the police Eagle helicopter as it travelled into the city.

After driving up Queen St, the driver let out two passengers who were caught by police soon after.

The driver drove back down the motorway but was finally stopped in Manurewa.

In total, seven people were apprehended and have been referred to the Manukau Youth Court.
