A remand prisoner has escaped from the Otago Corrections Facility this afternoon as he arrived under escort from a court.

Stephen Uriah Maddren, 25, was reported missing about 4.15pm today, police said.

Emergency services were currently at the prison, in Milton, and Corrections staff were working with police to determine his whereabouts.

A helicopter with night-vision equipment was being used to search in the Milburn area, police said this evening.

Although Maddren is not considered a danger to the public, police warned people not to approach him, and said they should call 111 if they saw him.

Maddren is described as European, 171cm tall with mullet-type brown or black shoulder-length hair and no teeth.

He was last seen wearing green track pants and a green top.

Department of Corrections regional commissioner for the Southern Region Ian Bourke said the incident happened just inside the prison grounds.
