A second person has appeared in the Timaru District Court over the death of an Ashburton man.

An Ashburton man, 24, appeared before a registrar yesterday, charged with assaulting Arran James Gairns, 34, with intent to rob, on Saturday, May 31, in Ashburton.

Last night police said they had arrested a third person in relation to the alleged robbery. A 26-year-old Ashburton man will appear in the Timaru District Court this morning, charged with assaulting Arran Gairns with intent to rob.

Gairns' body was found on Sunday in a drainage run-off area behind commercial premises on West St, Ashburton.

His death was being treated as unexplained, Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill of Mid-South Canterbury Police said.

The accused has interim name suppression. He was remanded on bail to June 24.

A Wellington woman, 26, charged with the same offence, entered no plea when she appeared in court on Wednesday.

She also has interim name suppression, and was bailed to a Hawke's Bay address by Judge Joanna Maze, but the arrangement fell through.

She is now being held in custody until July 3. Police said on Wednesday they were hunting three alleged male co-offenders, whose names are suppressed.
