A 66-year-old Far North man will appear in court today charged with rape and indecent assault of children, including girls under 12-years-old.

James Brian Sanders, of Kaitaia, is due to appear in the Kaikohe District Court on 17 charges, relating to alleged sexual volation of children between 1997 and 2006.

The latest allegations follow 25 charges laid against Sanders late last year, relating to eight female victims aged under 12 to 16-years-old.

Sanders pleaded not guilty at the time.

Police say five alleged victims had since come forward, leading to the new charges, including sexual violation by rape, indecent assault against a female aged 12-16 years and indecent assault against a female aged over 16 years.

Sanders was living in a small community south of Whangarei at the time of the alleged offences.

Police said they had spoken to a number of victims and witnesses, but still wanted any further information relating to the case.

People with information can contact Detective Mark Dalzell at Kaitaia Police on 09 408 6500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
