The charge against a Hamilton man accused of assaulting a baby who later died, has been upgraded to murder.

The 33-year-old was originally charged with assaulting a child but the murder charge was added this morning.

He appeared briefly in the Hamilton District Court for a bail-application hearing, but the matter was further adjourned by Community Magistrate Kathryn Wilson.

He was remanded in custody to reappear in the High Court in Hamilton on July 8.

The man's lawyer Charles Bean successfully argued for his client's name suppression to continue until his next appearance.

The man, who has interim name suppression, was arrested on Sunday after the 8-month-old boy was taken to Waikato Hospital with critical injuries. The baby transferred to Auckland's Starship children's hospital where he subsequently died.

A large contingent of the man's family was in court today to support the man and yelled out messages of support.
