A man deemed not "the brightest spark" has been arrested after he phoned police and told them "I'm doing a burglary".

The incident unfolded at the Beat St Cafe in central Christchurch about 5.15am today.

The man allegedly broke into the business on the corner of Barbadoes St and Armagh St.

He then called police and abused them.

"He rang and said, 'I'm doing a burglary'. He was abusive. He wasn't the brightest spark," Inspector Derek Erasmus said.

Police were able to monitor the man on CCTV cameras in the area and he was arrested a short time later.

Beat St Cafe chef Marcus Moynihan said police had just arrested the man when he arrived at work about 5.30am.

The cafe was a mess, with windows, cups and plates smashed. The cash register had also been dropped on the floor and badly damaged.

Outside, two cars had smashed windscreens, he said.

Police told him the man had ransacked his flat before the alleged burglary.

He had been charged with burglary and damaging a vehicle.

No further details were available.
