A Mongrel Mob member was found naked in a swamp in the Hawke's Bay early this morning after he tried to run from police.

Police pursued a stolen vehicle just after 1am this morning, and used road spikes which brought the car to a halt near a marshy area in Taradale, Napier, a police spokesman said.

Two men fled on foot into the swamp, and were tracked by a police dog and located a short time later.

"One of them, for whatever reason, was naked by this stage.

"Presumably he was trying to avoid being detected by the dog, but I really don't know," the spokesman said.

The naked man suffered mild hypothermia and was taken to hospital to be examined.

A third person travelling in the vehicle evaded police, who are making inquiries to track them down through items left behind in the car.
