An alleged fleeing driver attempted to thwart police by calling them and claiming his car had been crashed by other people.
But the ruse failed, police central communications Inspector Bruce Mackay said.
About 10am today police tried to stop the man, who they suspected was a disqualified driver, on Onslow Rd in the Wellington suburb of Khandallah.
The man allegedly failed to stop and after a short, ''low-key'' chase he drove up the driveway of a ''random address'' and hid on the property there.
He likely would have got away if it were not for two members of the public who called police after seeing the man duck up the driveway, off Onslow Rd.
When the man realised police were already on the same property he allegedly called and reported two people had taken his car and crashed it then ran away.
''He was trying to put us off the scent. That just didn't work.''
The man would likely be charged with failing to stop and possibly with driving while disqualified. Other charges were possible, Mackay said.
