An 11-year-old boy is in CYF custody after allegedly leading police on a high-speed car chase in South Auckland overnight.

The chase began after a member of the public saw a Mitsubishi Galant driving erratically with what appeared to be a child at the wheel. The driver sped off when police officers tried to pull him over about midnight.

The boy is alleged to have hit speeds of up to 120kmh with a passenger on board. He fled on foot after the two-minute chase ended, police said.

Officers caught the passenger from the car, who "confirmed that the driver was an 11-year-old boy who had escaped from CYFS custody".

The boy is now in the custody of CYF, police say.
