Police are investigating a sexual attack in Porirua in an apparent home invasion that took place in the early hours of this morning.

Investigators are requesting the public's help in identifying an attacker after a woman reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted. The man was a stranger who forced his way into her home in the Titahi Bay area, Senior Sergeant Mark Chenery said.

The man had knocked on her door at 5am today and asked the woman who answered for a person who did not live at the address. "She has then gone to close the door and he has forced his way into the house and a sexual assault has occurred," Chenery said.

The woman then managed to get away into a secure room and her attacker left the house, Chenery said.

There were other people present at the property but they were not awoken by the disturbance, Chenery said, and police are appealing for witness accounts from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area early this morning. The attack occurred in the residential area between Arnold and Kura Parks.

The victim of the attack has received medical treatment and has provided a description of her attacker who appeared intoxicated, Chenery said.

The offender was described as olive skinned, either Maori or Pacific Island descent, in his late teens or early twenties, 180cm tall with a slight build, with big Hazel eyes, dressed in a black hoodie and dark trousers.

Police are urging anyone with information that will help identify of the attacker to come forward and contact the crime squad by calling 381 2000 or by providing information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
