A Hastings man has admitted sexually assaulting an 87-year-old woman in her home.

The 30-year-old who had previously pleaded not guilty, today admitted to assaulting the woman on November 7 last year.

Hugh Hemi Tuatua Tareha can be identified now that name suppression has been lifted.

Appearing in the High Court at Napier, Tareha pleaded guilty to four charges of unlawful sexual connection, injuring with intent, two charges of assault with intent to cause sexual violation and two burglary charges.

Tareha approached the woman when she went to check her letterbox about midday.

He then dragged her inside and attacked her in her home.

She was found by her son when he arrived at the house about five hours later.

The Dominion Post can now reveal that Tareha assaulted another woman in her home that day.

Crown prosecutor Steve Manning asked that health reports be prepared for sentencing as the Crown was seeking a sentence of preventative detention.

Lawyer Russell Fairbrother QC also asked for a cultural report.

Justice Simon France entered the convictions and noted that Tareha would receive a second strike under the three strikes legislation at sentencing in September.

Tareha was remanded in custody.
