An armed man is at large after trying to hold up a Christchurch dairy.

Police were alerted to the incident in Papanui shortly before 6pm tonight.

A spokesman said a man in a balaclava presented a gun and demanded money.

A shop attendant at the till then screamed and the man ran out without taking anything.

No further details were available from police.
