A man who wielded a pistol at a Christchurch dairy attendant before making off with cash and tobacco is still on the run.

Police said the man entered the Mairehau Food Studio on Briggs Rd about 8pm last night.

He then pointed a pistol at the attendant and demanded money and cigarettes.

"The store attendant did the right thing and did as she was asked and the male left with cash and tobacco," a police statement said.

The man is described as dark skinned, about 170 centimetres tall, skinny and 25 to 30 years old.

He wore a black scarf over his face and a dark hooded top with large, brightly coloured letters on the front.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Chris Power on (03) 363 7400 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
