A man who led a high-speed chase through central Whangarei this morning with a young child in his car has been apprehended.
The man was disturbed as he attempted to burgle a Maungakaramea property just after 9am.
He fled the scene in a Mitsubishi 4WD with a male passenger, a female passenger and a three-year-old child in the vehicle.
A short time later police spotted the vehicle on State Highway 14, and followed as it took off at speed.
The man drove at speeds of around 80kmh through central Whangarei, and attempted to lose police around the Town Basin area.
He then left the CBD and headed north through Kamo.
The man was arrested at Rushbrook Rd in Ruatangata after he drove over a police spike belt.
Acting Whangarei/Kaipara area commander Inspector Justin Rogers said the 28-year-old man is being questioned.
Rogers was concerned to see a young child had been put at risk, and the matter was being dealt with in conjunction with Child, Youth and Family.
