A Southland Sharks basketball player has been sentenced to community detention in the New Plymouth District Court today.

Shea Ili, 21 was one of a trio of players who attacked New Plymouth bar staff during a night on the town following a win against the Taranaki Mountain Airs in New Plymouth on May 25.

Trouble started after the three were refused entry to the Crowded House bar.

They attacked their victims, bar staff and others, before fleeing back to their hotel in the early hours of the morning.

One man was left unconscious.

At a hearing in June the trio, Ili, Reuben Te Rangi, 19, and Leon Henry, 28, pleaded guilty to a total of five charges but asked convictions not be entered while it was decided if a case would be made for discharges without conviction.

Today Ili was sentenced to four months community detention on a charge of assault with intent to injure and three months community detention on a charge of common assault; the sentences are to be served concurrently.

A daily 7pm to 7am curfew was imposed and Ili was also ordered to pay his victims reparation, $500 to bar manager Maxwell O'Leary and $750 to staff member Jackie Miller.

Meanwhile Henry, who has pleaded guilty to two charges of injuring with intent and assault with intent to injure, has had his sentencing deferred until March 19 so he can apply for contracts to play basketball in Australia.

Te Rangi who has admitted a charge of assault with intent to injure has had his sentencing postponed until September 10.
