A suspicious fire in an unoccupied Tokoroa flat is to be investigated by the fire service and police.

Firefighters were called to a block of flats in Kupe Place soon after 5pm yesterday, fire northern communications shift manager Steve Smith said.

A fire was well under way in a vacant 10m by 6m flat and would have caused significant damage, he said.

The flat was of block construction with timber internal walls and the fire was being treated as suspicious.

Fire safety had attended and was due to return this morning with police.
