Fire tore through a Kawhia home overnight in suspicious circumstances.

Investigators are at the scene today to try and pin down exactly how the house on Tahuri St caught alight but it is being treated as suspicious, Fire Service spokeswoman Megan Ruru said.

Trucks from Kawhia and Otorohanga brigades responded to the emergency call at 11.30pm last night and the building was well ablaze when they arrived, Ruru said.

They initially thought people were trapped inside and fire fighters raised the alert level to two.

Yet the two back-up trucks were stood down after everyone was accounted for.

Ruru said it did not appear that anyone was injured or treated for smoke inhalation in the blaze.
