An elderly woman managed to escape a 19-year-old who attacked her during a home invasion.

The woman was attacked in her Whangamata home in the early hours of this morning by a man known to her who had broken into her house, police said.

She was able to escape to a neighbour's house, where police and ambulance services were called.

The 19-year-old was arrested later in the day and appeared in the Hamilton District Court this afternoon on injuring and burglary charges.

Despite the gravity of the attack, the woman suffered only minor injuries which required minimal medical attention, police said.

No-one else was being sought in relation to the incident.
