A Bay of Plenty man has been convicted of filming himself sexually violating and raping his then wife while she was unconscious.

The 66-year-old man, whose name is suppressed, was found guilty in the High Court at Hamilton on more than 200 charges, The Bay of Plenty Times reported.

They included 74 counts of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, 17 of rape, and 61 counts of possessing intimate recordings without reasonable excuse.

The offences occurred between 1999 and 2007.

The man claimed the images found on his computer were his "own erotica" and all sexual activity had been consensual.

He will be sentenced on July 10.
