David Bain's legal battle may be over, but the jury in the court of public opinion is undecided.
Chatrooms, blogs, social-networking sites and news forums have been inundated with feedback debating Friday's not-guilty verdicts.
Strong support for Bain was evident in a Stuff online poll, with about two-thirds of the more than 9000 voters agreeing with the verdicts.
In Otago, the 995 people in a newspaper poll were less convinced, with 46 per cent backing the verdict, 41 per cent disagreeing.
Thirteen per cent were unsure.
Groups devoted to Bain on networking site Facebook have been flooded with varying opinions.
The site's largest group convinced of Bain's guilt has more than double the members of the largest group believing he is innocent.
In one Facebook group, member Robin Kidd wrote that Bain should buy a Lotto ticket.
Another member, Valerie Henderson, wrote that the verdict had brought tears to her eyes.
"He's going to have a tough road building his new life."
Nearly 100 comments, all congratulatory, have been posted on Bain's fundraising website.
