A man is in intensive care after a vicious attack in Wellington where a group of thugs set upon him and urinated on him.
Police are seeking witnesses to the pack attack at Waitangi Park skate ramp about 8.30pm Monday. He now requires facial surgery.
Detective Sergeant Martin Todd said up to five attackers set upon the 24-year-old man.
"This is a particularly vicious and callous attack," he said.
"The victim was left with serious facial injuries and the group of offenders urinated on him when he was possibly unconscious."
A witness to part of the assault told police they saw a group of up to five people surrounding the man as he lay on the ground.
One offender was overheard talking about urinating on the victim, Mr Todd said.
The man was admitted to Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit, where he is to undergo surgery for the serious facial injuries he sustained.
Mr Todd said the man had cash and other items taken from him but due to the nature of his injuries has no recollection of what happened to him or where it occurred.
The group was described as wearing black hooded sweatshirts. A female was believed to have taken part.
Anyone who saw the attack or anything suspicious in the area should call police on 04 496 3468.
