The grandmother of a teenager left fighting for his life after being run down by a car in Tokoroa at the weekend says an arrest made last night is "great news".

An 18-year-old Rotorua man was arrested at a rural Rotorua house last night and charged with the attempted murder of Seth Tera, 15.

He was to appear in the Tokoroa District Court this morning.

Police said Seth was chased for several blocks before being run over in Baberton St about 3.30am Saturday.

Tokoroa CIB Detective Sergeant Kevan Verry said yesterday the attack was part of a gang initiation, with clothing and mannerisms indicating those responsible were associated with the Mongrel Mob.

"They are wannabes of this gang and they are just using that to intimidate members of the public," he said.

The injured youth and his two friends had no links to any gang and they just happened to be "in the wrong place at the wrong time", Mr Verry said.

This morning Mr Verry would not comment specifically on the arrests but did say further arrests were possible. The Isuzu MU 4WD vehicle allegedly used was also seized.

He was initially in a critical condition at Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit but this morning his condition improved to serious.

His family where keeping a bedside vigil, praying for him to emerge from a coma.

Seth's grandmother, Annie Tera, 78, originally from the Cook Islands, was unable to make it to the hospital.

Speaking from her Tokoroa house this morning, she told the Waikato Times that the arrest was "good news".

Mrs Tera said the car had run right over Seth's whole body.

"I've not been the same since it happened," she said. "I've got someone here looking after me. He is only 15, a baby. My baby."

She said Seth was a good boy who visited her often.

Tokoroa High School principal Elgin Edwards said Seth was a good student and was actively involved in the school's Pasifika group, Te Manava.

Mr Edwards said he was extremely worried when he heard about what had happened.

"Initially we thought it was a lot worse," Mr Edwards said.

"We thought he hadn't survived. That would have been a tragedy."

Mr Edwards said counselling would be provided to any student or teacher who required it.

Tokoroa High was a close-knit school, so an incident such as this would have a huge impact on them, he said.

Police want the public's help to trace the movements of the vehicle believed to be involved.

They want to hear from anyone who saw the charcoal coloured 4WD, registration ZX9349, in the Tokoroa or Mangakino area on Friday or Saturday.

Ad Feedback

The vehicle has a distinctive maroon-coloured driver's door and maroon-coloured panels over the front wheels.

It also has a dark-coloured bonnet and a small front bull-bar.

to the people asking why he wasnt in bed at 3:30????

Are you serious, it was a Friday night, the kid is 15. Do you know how easy it is to trick your parents into letting ya stay at a mates, or even once they go to bed at 11 (thats when my parents were always asleep bye) seneak out and they are none the wiser??

If you all have kids then I garuntee your kids would of snuck out at some stage without you knowing, Its easy to fool your parents once you worl out there routines...

The snivel liberty do-gooders will argue that bad environments create bad people. An equally valid argument is that bad people create bad environments.

We have spent millions trying to remedy the situation based on the first theory, which has been a dismal failure. The do-gooders argue to throw more and more money and resources at the problem, of which some of them are beneficiaries in the form of defense lawyers, judges, counselors, and government bureaucrats.

Perhaps we should try a solution based on the second theory.

I agree with Penny, its got nothing to do with the fact that he was out at 3:30am regardless of the age, its that the 4WD hunted the kid down for several blocks before running him over, wanna be gnagsters pfft how about we all get 4WDs and run them down.

So this is just punishment for not being tucked into bed at 3.30am then #2 and #4? Wow.

I agree with Peter, bring back the death penalty and be rid of scum like this once and for all. This country's justice system is screwed.

Agree with others - who is caring for this boy? How does this kid concentrate at school when he has been out till after 3:30am at the weekends? Most likely he doesn't and is a disruption to those with proper parenting.

I would bet there is more to this story than is being reported here...

If he lives, these mongrels probably won't see much jail time. If he dies, they'll get, what, a few years? They'll come out of jail as fully patched members and heroes!

Who cares if the 15yo was out at 3.30am? Is that illegal? It's somehow his fault?

Bring back the death penalty . . not as a "deterrent", but simply to get scum like this off the streets. They serve no purpose, and society doesn't need them. Sadly, they won't be executed. They'll be out in a few years dealing drugs, raping and murdering more innocent people.

Welcome to the world of no punishment and consequences for your actions.

Why are we sending the SAS to Afganistan when we have a serious domestic terrorist problem here?

Family group conferences and group hugs won't fix this one!

I do not see the point of what it was, it doesnt matter what time it happend whether at 3am or 3pm this stuff can happend to anyone at any time!! So to blame the parents, saying that their son shouldnt be out at this time morning is redick!

I agree lowlifes like this should be locked up, however we must look at where the peer presure for someone to do this is comming from!
