Armed police training in Wellington this morning were handily placed when a man with a gun was seen in the area.

The Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) were on a exercise near Aotea Quay at 8.23am, when a member of the public reported seeing a man with a firearm down the road in Kaiwharawhara.

The area was cleared, and no gunman was found, a police spokesman said.

The AOS exercise is continuing.
