The policeman who accidentally shot dead a teenage courier driver is expected to give evidence at the coroner's inquest into the teenager's death this week.

Halatau Naitoko, 17, died when he was accidentally shot by police on Auckland's north western motorway in January as they chased another man, Stephen Hohepa McDonald, later jailed for 13 years on 23 charges.

Mr Naitoko, an innocent bystander, was caught on the crossfire between police and McDonald and shot dead when a pursuit stopped on the motorway on January 23.

Mr Naitoko died from a police bullet to his chest after being caught in crossfire as McDonald tried to hijack a truck.

The officer who fired the fatal shot had permanent name suppression in McDonald's court appearance.
