A father and son visiting a South Auckland grave instead discovered the dead body of a tattooed man.
An autopsy is being carried out on the unidentified man this morning.
A police spokeswoman said the body was discovered yesterday lunchtime at the Manukau Memorial Gardens Crematorium and Cemetery.
There were no signs of violence to the body, she said.
The man was described as bald, with four distinctive tattooed strips starting on his forehead and ending at the back of his head.
Anyone who knew the identity of the man was asked to contact the Counties Manukau Police Crime Squad on (09) 261 1321.
