A 34-year-old man from the United Kingdom appeared in the Invercargill District Court today charged with manslaughter.

Paul Richards appeared in court following the death of Mark Smith, 47, in Queenstown on November 19.

Mr Smith died about 11.30pm after an altercation at a Camp St taxi stand.

A charge of common assault was withdrawn in court and interim name suppression of Richards was also lifted.

He entered no plea and was remanded on bail to an Invercargill address.

He was ordered not to enter Queenstown and not to approach family members of Mr Smith.

Richards is scheduled to reappear in the Invercargill District Court on December 18.
