A memorial to slain barmaid Tania McKenzie will be unveiled on the bank of the Whanganui river tomorrow, in a private ceremony for the woman's family.

Ms McKenzie, 20, was sexually violated and killed in January 2005 by Shane Randle, who was found guilty of bashing her head in and throwing her into the river after she rejected his advances. Randle was a bouncer at the Red Lion Inn, where Ms McKenzie also worked.

Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws asked for the public to respect the wishes of the family over the unveiling of the bronze memorial at the Somme Parade riverbank.

"Tania's family wants this to be an occasion for the family only and requests that the public respects their privacy," Wanganui Mayor Laws said.
