An attempted breakout by a number of Auckland prisoners was foiled by Corrections staff today.

The prisoners disabled a security camera in an internal yard at Auckland Central Remand Prison and tried to prise open a mesh fence.

There were nine prisoners in the yard at the time, but it was not known how many were trying to escape, acting assistant regional manager Neville Mark said.

The attempt appeared to be spontaneous rather than planned, he said.

Staff noticed the prisoners' actions and reacted quickly, he said.

Once the prisoners involved had been identified, they would face internal charges and possible police charges.
