The occupants of a stolen stationwagon were being questioned by Gisborne police tonight after two chases involving up to 10 patrol cars and a helicopter.

The vehicle was initially spotted being driven north of Gisborne about 10am. Police set off in pursuit but lost the vehicle.

It was later spotted in the Tokomaru Bay area but again managed to elude chasing officers.

Eventually, police with a helicopter tracked down the vehicle, and arrested the driver and an accomplice.

Police said the pair faced a number of driving and other charges.
