A high-profile criminal - who once mounted a 12-day protest on top of Mt Eden Prison - is again on the run from police.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Simon Allan Kerr after the burglary of a home appliance store in Whangarei.

Police communications manager Sarah Kennett said the Noel Leeming store in the Okara Shopping Centre was robbed overnight on April 12, 2009.

A "substantial amount" of electrical equipment was stolen.

Kerr was the leader of the "Hole in the Wall" gang that used to break through walls and steal safes.

He also made headlines for a 12-day protest on top of Mt Eden Prison in Auckland.

Kerr is described as a male European, 190cm tall and of solid build.

Both his arms and legs are heavily tattooed and he has bats tattooed on each side of his neck. He has possibly grown his hair since the last photo was taken of him.

Kerr has been sighted in the Whangarei area recently and he also has strong links to Auckland.

If anyone has information on Kerr's whereabouts they can contact Whangarei Police on 09 430 4500 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
