A police officer was choked with his own radio cord by a burglar as he tried to call for help.

But the 50-year-old constable fought back and overpowered the offender and, despite bruising around his neck and body, promised to be back at work today.

Wellington Detective Sergeant Chris Moore said police were called to a burglary at a workshop on Abel Smith St yesterday morning.

The burglar had unwittingly left a calling card – a bail bond.

When police returned about 3pm to make inquiries, an officer saw the suspect on the property. He went to arrest the man but he put up a fight.

In the struggle both men ended up on the ground and the policeman went to radio for help, but the offender grabbed the cord and wrapped it around his neck.

The constable fought back and overpowered him and, as he called for help, the burglar ran away.

Police arrested a man, 29, and charged him with injuring with intent. Further burglary charges are likely.
